Relationships & sex education (RSE)

HeartSmart is a creative approach that we use to build character, emotional health and resilience in our children. It equips them with foundational principles and skills that will improve their mental health, relationships and academic achievement. As a school we recognise the value of educating the heart alongside educating the mind and HeartSmart is a great tool to do just that.

There are some fun phrases that are part of the program and I’m sure you’ll start hearing them in your home as well. They’re called the HeartSmart High Five and here’s a brief overview:

You may also hear about BORIS the Robot. Boris, HeartSmart’s very own purpose-built Robot, provides a fun, interactive and dynamic way for children to explore their hearts, the very thing that makes them unique. He’s made from bits and bobs of recycled rubbish and plays an important role in HeartSmart. We follow his story of learning not to listen to the Scrapman’s voice (who says that Boris belongs on the scrapheap). There’s a book that we read and reference (depending on year group) and if you wanted you could get a copy for your home.

We ensure we meet the statutory guidance for Relationships education as outlined in our policy.  Governors, staff and parents were involved in co-producing our policy which is available at the foot of this webpage.

Useful documents

The overview document available below shows how children’s learning is spread across each year group, giving plenty of opportunity for repetition and recall.

We ensure we give children the opportunity to use knowledge learned in previous years and to practise skills.  This is clearly outlined in this progression grid available below.
