Reception News

This week the Hedgehogs went on an adventure, their first school trip!

We travelled to Everdon Outdoor Learning Centre and Everdon Stubbs to learn more about the woodland and the big and small creatures that live there. Bug viewers were used to take a closer look at the small insects, which were a contrast to the large badger sets we found in the woods. A lovely day was had by all!

Year 1 News

In year 1 we have been making animal enclosures. We got given an animal and then worked together as a group to build an enclosure for it. We needed to consider how it moves, how big it is and that it contained all that it needs to stay healthy.

To link with our Coastline theme, Squirrels were lucky to have a visit from the RNLI this week. Alison came to speak to us about water safety and how the RNLI help people at the coastline. There were 4 key messages: stop and think, stay together, float, and call 999. We even had our very own lifeguards dressed in the uniform!

This week the Badgers have been learning about the measurement of length and in science the children have been investigating magnetic forces.

The Badgers have also been recapping the Christian celebration of Pentecost; their learning was further enhanced by a Collective Worship led by our School Governor Rev. Dawn.    See more

Nursery News

A wonderful week in Nursery has been had by all by focusing our play and learning around the story ‘Polar bear, polar bear, what do you hear?’ by Eric Carle. We have loved watching polar bears and their cubs in their natural habitat, rolling in the snow and sliding into the icy water! Ask us what we have learnt about polar bears!    See more

At the end of last term, Year 2 were practising making a spark with a flint and steel. Once they had mastered the technique and were able to create 'good' sparks we attempted to light a ball of cotton wool. The amount of perseverance displayed by the children was amazing and the sense of joy they experienced when they achieved a fire was beautiful to see.

The damper weather proved to be the ideal conditions for investigating the numerous slugs and snails we find in Forest School. We have made some habitats for them and enjoyed observing how they move and eat. We have also been den building, making jubilee pompom decorations and digging for bones and treasure! I was very impressed with the bird reserve which some of the children had put together and took great delight in showing me round!

Strictly Monksmoor!

Last month our Year 1 and 2 dance team took part in the Dancing School UK competition at the Deco Theatre.

The children performed onstage a polka and a waltz to a panel of independent judges. We are amazingly proud of how hard they worked, and they pulled out all the stops on the day in a very closely fought contest.

We achieved 4th place and were delighted to hear we scored only 1 point behind the school in third place and were very close to the second place score! This is an amazing achievement for a new school that has no experience of the competition and our children should be very proud of their achievement and efforts to learn a new skill.

Thanks is owed to Mrs Haywood and parent volunteer Mrs Bennett who worked tirelessly and gave up their time to prepare our children and to enable them to have this wonderful opportunity!

PE & Sports News

On Thursday 9th June, a team from Year 3 entered the Northamptonshire Sport Tri-Golf Competition against Year 3/4 school teams from the west of the county.

Thank you to the parents and carers who supported with their time and transport, as we're a small school if we did not have this support we could not have entered a team. We can all see how much the children enjoyed and appreciated it in the photo below!

Stars of the Week

Well done to all our stars for being a
shining example in faith, love, self-control and patience.
Not all of our stars could be included today, look out for more next week.

FEELINGS BOXES INSTALLATION

You may remember that on Northamptonshire Mental Health Awareness Day, 11th February, we wore an item of uniform inside out and some of our year groups also illustrated and created colourful paper slips depicting how they were feeling that day.  The feelings were used by West Northamptonshire Council to create a lasting memory of this year’s theme “IT’S THE INSIDE THAT MATTERS”, through an artistic installation.

The structure is created from seven rainbow-coloured Perspex boxes, which have been filled with 20,000 feelings from 84 schools across the county.

Northamptonshire Libraries have been displaying this eye-catching installation over the last few months.  This month Daventry will showcase the art installation, you can see the artwork at Daventry Library between 23rd June - 24th July.

IT’S THE INSIDE THAT MATTERS

Whilst we can see through the boxes that these feelings are there; we cannot see what they are and that is why it’s important to ask people how they are feeling.

Because it’s the inside that matters.
