Week ending 15th July 2022

Year 1 News

Year 1 have been making interactive pictures. We chose a habitat for an animal and then selected the colours we needed to paint the background. We then drew an animal and attached it to a lollipop stick. A slit was put into the paper for us to poke the lollipop stick through. We could then move the animal from side to side to give the impression that it was moving across the page.

Year 2 News

Year 2 have been thinking hard about the message “No way through isn’t true!” And how we need to have patience sometimes to overcome challenges. We made clouds to reflect this with things we found challenging and colourful raindrops to show the successes to come if we don’t give up.

This week Year 3 have continued with their Eat well - Live well topic. They have cooked potatoes in different ways and have developed peeling and knife skills. Year 3 have also been looking at pre-historic pottery types. They have been sketching designs, trying out pottery techniques and have then made a Bell Beaker Pot.

Nursery News

We have learned about taking care in the sunshine this week and made our own shade using a sheet. We have made fans to cool us down and enjoyed some cooling water play.

We have also been very busy welcoming the children who will join us in September at our Stay and Play Sessions.

Forest School News

The end of term in Forest School has seen the children suggesting some of the activities they'd most like to do again. We've had all sorts happening and many treasures found while digging in our very own Forest School excavation area including a piece of bone!

Safeguarding

Staying safe and well in the heat

A Public Health Message from West Northamptonshire Council

A Heat-Health alert has been put into place as even overnight temperatures are predicted to be very warm. High temperatures come with health consequences for some people. It’s important to protect those most vulnerable including our children, those with health conditions and elderly, as well as keeping yourself safe.

Here are our top tips for staying safe in the heat:

  • look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated
  • stay hydrated, take water with you if you are travelling or out and about
  • stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm as this is when UV rays are the strongest - avoid physical exertion at this time
  • if you have to go out in the heat stay in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a wide brimmed hat
  • close curtains in rooms that the sun faces - this will help rooms remain cooler - remember it could be cooler outdoors than indoors
  • never leave anyone in a parked closed vehicle – especially not animals, children or babies
  • avoid travelling at peak times on motorways, particularly if transporting children or the elderly
  • sadly accidents, often fatal, happen in water at this time of year particularly involving youngsters. That’s why we’re asking parents to supervise their children in and around water. Although it can be fun to cool off in water structures such as bridges, locks and flood channels, and reservoirs and quarries should be avoided. Make sure you know the RNLI’s Float to Live
  • unexpectedly cold water or strong currents can catch even experienced swimmers off guard. Better to swim safely at one of the county’s organised events where support is provided

Look out for signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and follow some common sense behaviours to make the most of what should be a glorious time for most.

PTA News

Summer Social Thursday 21st July – 5:30 to 9:30 pm

We hope that as many families as possible will join us on the field next week to enjoy some much needed social time together. Current families, new families, staff and governors are all invited to what we hope will be an enjoyable way to end a busy school year.

This event has been organised by our PTA and they have been able to secure food stalls, live music and entertainment. Access to the field will be via the bottom Forest School Gate. As this is a social event, children remain the responsibility of parents at all times.

Food is available to purchase from the following vendors, but please bring a camping chair/table if you wish to sit and eat. You are welcome to bring your own drinks but please, no alcohol.

· The Frying Scotsman fish and chip van

· Laffertys wood fired pizzas

· Biscuiterie

All have agreed to donate 10% of takings to the school PTA.

Vocalist Sarah-Jayne will be performing two sets for us and provide dancing music in between. There will also be a bouncy castle for a donation.

Return your reply slip to school, indicating how many tickets you require, by Tuesday 19th July. Tickets will be sent home on Wednesday 20th July.
