Children in Need Day

On 17th November we had a lot of fun during our 'Wear your favourite hat day' and non-uniform day to raise money for Children in Need.

A competition was organised by Mr Margieson for the children who created their own hats.  This was judged by Mrs Towers and Mr Gooding from The Rutland Learning Trust.  There were so many fantastic entries and an array of themes which really showcased the children's amazing creativity and wonderful imagination.

There were three £10 book voucher prizes generously donated by the 'Suddenly on Sheaf Street' bookshop, awarded to:

  • River for the Nursery and Reception category
  • A Key Stage 1 pupil
  • Betsy for the Key Stage 2 category

We raised £172.00, thank you to all who donated.  If you are able to make a donation you can still do so using your ParentMail app (select Shop at the bottom of your app) or by using our JustGiving page.

The money you have raised will be used to help change the lives of children and young people facing disadvantage in communities across the UK.

Nursery News

During a very busy week of whole school events, preparations have begun in Nursery for our 5th Annual Scarecrows' Wedding, which is due to take place next week. The children have been writing their names on wedding invitations, creating our bride and groom ready for the big day and have even been making scarecrows at home to bring into Nursery as our wedding congregation.  Photo gallery

This week Hedgehogs have been learning about Diwali, we have been able to compare celebrations and have enjoyed the story very much. We have learnt new skills using tools and shaping clay to make divas. We used textures in creating Rangoon patterns with coloured rice then extended this with fine brushes. Hedgehogs have become brilliant pattern makers over time, creating their own firework designs. Super proud!  Our photos

Forest School - We have been noticing signs of the changing seasons and made transient art inspired by the story, 'Leaf Man'. The children enjoyed making bird feeders and continuing to use palm drills to make our cookie necklaces. The favourite for lots of us is still the muddy puddle!

This week in art we have been investigating colour in the work of Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky. We made comparisons between the two artists' use of colour then used our colour mixing knowledge to mix our own colours to match the artworks.

In D&T this week we continued our work on frame structures.  The Badgers used construction straws to model solutions to strengthen a cuboid.

They learned to use a junior hacksaw to cut wood for their greenhouse frames using the dimensions from the plans they created last week. By the end of the lesson they'd created a wooden box frame with the corners strengthened by cardboard corners.  Photo gallery

This week has been Anti-Bullying Week: the theme this year is “Make a Noise” about bullying. On Monday we wore odd socks to remind us that we are all different and that this should be celebrated. We worked in groups to make up Anti-Bullying Poems and raps to make our voices heard.

This week we have put our science investigation skill to the test: firstly we investigated the effect of using different size gears. By selecting a range of different gears we observed how many rotations the ‘driver’ gear and ‘driven’ gear completed and then recorded this as a ratio.

Forest School News

There was a lot of fun in the mud for Forest School groups this week with the mud slide and puddle being a big draw for many children. I don't think the school washing machine will ever be the same again but it was lovely to see children working and having fun together while developing imaginative and collaborative working skills.
