We celebrated the return of spring with the crowning of our May King and May Queen and lots of maypole dancing on the afternoon of Wednesday 1st May. Unusually for the Monksmoor Park May Day Celebration there was no torrential rain! An enjoyable time was had by all.
We observed the longstanding tradition of crowning a May Queen and our tradition, to also crown a May King! Thank you to our friend and School Governor Rev. Dawn for crowning our May King and Queen.
Thank you to all the parents and family members who came to see us dance, and for clapping to the music and encouraging us all!

The warm weather may not quite be with us yet, but the children in Nursery have sprung into action this term investigating our new topic 'Animal Safari'. We have also begun our phonics learning, exploring the sounds letters make and have started putting them together to blend them into short words. This is always a very exciting term as we move the children's learning on and it is lovely to see so much progress as we begin to look towards the next academic year. Photo gallery

The children in Reception have had a fantastic return after the Easter holiday and are really enthused by our learning entitled 'Sunshine and Sunflowers'. We have been waiting patiently for our caterpillars to change and are using lots of challenging vocabulary, just ask us about insect facts and exoskeletons!
We're keen to grow our sunflowers and fields in the farm and will be looking at the story of 'The Extraordinary Gardener' next week. Well done to all our children in their amazing maypole dancing, we are very proud of you. Photo gallery

Year 1 have noticed some seasonal changes down in Forest School, such as the leaves growing back on the trees, blossom and lots more life starting to reappear. We found lots of minibeasts including worms, ants, centipedes, spiders, slugs and beetles. The children enjoyed making magic potions and "Forest Faces" using clay and natural materials that they collected. Photo gallery

This week we also had a visit from Mike from the NSPCC. He brought along his friend Buddy (a friendly speech bubble puppet) to teach us about how to stay safe and who to talk to if we feel unsafe or have a worry. The children enjoyed completing the workshop and remembered lots from their virtual assembly last week. A big thank you to the NSPCC for providing this workshop! Photo gallery

In Design & Technology we have been working on Cam mechanisms. We learned about converting circular motion, turning around and around, into linear motion, which might be side to side, or up and down in a straight line. As the cam mechanism turns, the linear motion is repeated over and over again, and this is called reciprocating motion. We enjoyed designing and making our unique pieces. Year 3 photos

In design and technology, Year 4 have been finishing last term’s unit on simple machines. This is a companion project to their work on Ancient Egypt. The children have been wondering how the Ancient Egyptians managed to build their enormous pyramids and tombs using only simple machines. Recently their innovate project was to design and make a prototype of a machine that would have been useful to the Ancient Egyptian tomb builders.

Year 4 have had a great start to the summer term. They have really enjoyed travelling to the pool as well as their first swimming lesson as a class – they were very excited! Year 4 have also been very busy preparing for the Maypole dance. They were overjoyed when they finally cracked the dance. The highlight of the last few weeks was making poo in our science lesson on digestion. There were squeals and screams of delight at how disgusting it was! The children were very sensible and managed to keep the mess on the tables and not the floor.
Unfortunately the photos failed, although you might actually be thankful you've been spared from seeing our experiment results!

Tool work has been one of the opportunities for Year 5 over the last couple of weeks. The children were able to use a hammer to add nails to a wooden 'cookie' before willow was woven around them to construct a nest. Secateurs were used to cut the willow and trim the ends before the children foraged for moss and other items to put inside their nest. Photo gallery

Some of the class decided that the mud slide needed an upgrade. One group worked at trying to flatten out the original one by digging and clearing, while another group decided it would be better to create a new one. Lots of fun was had and there was great teamwork, negotiation and communication in evidence.
Forest School plea!! If anyone is ever doing any pruning and clearing in the garden, we would always welcome donations of sticks, branches, stumps, pine cones etc. to add to our Forest School. Being a fairly new site we don't yet have the benefit of large trees to provide us with these things and there's only so much I can carry on my dog walks! Many thanks.

We were very excited to begin the summer term and to start at Mrs Brock's after-school Gardening Club. The children have been busy preparing the raised beds in the allotment, discovering and caring for minibeasts, planting peas and beans and even a sunflower to take home. See more photos here.
The club filled up fast and we have a very long waiting list in case of cancellations. Thank you to everyone who applied.

Update from the Governing Board
Whilst we are waiting for the legal agreement of land ownership to be settled, between the local authority and the Diocese. We are pleased to announce governors have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, with Rutland Learning Trust, so the partnership has commenced as of April 1st. This is a temporary measure put in place until the transition contract can be signed, hopefully in the summer.
