Nursery News

The Fox Cubs have continued to learn about healthy eating this week and we visited the school allotment to see the differences between crops which grow above the ground and below the ground. We continued to learn the importance of following instructions and used this skill to help us make our own homemade chips, which the children all enjoyed at snack time.

Reception News

The children have been really enthused retelling the 3 Little Pigs stories. We have been building some amazing homes using construction and are getting so good at talking about materials! We are amazed how keen the children are to write and also apply this confidence in their role-play. That wolf needs to be careful!

Appeal - We would be happy to receive donations of cardboard boxes for junk modelling next week, such as cereal boxes etc. Thank you.

Year 1 News

Following everything they learned about Shabbat from our Jewish visitor, Year 1 had their own Shabbat experience. The children made and plaited their own Challah bread and then enjoyed it later during 'Shabbat' with some blackcurrant squash, music and prayer. The children then spent time together, playing games, making music and relaxing.

Year 2 News

Squirrels have been working so hard this week, we are so proud of them! Everyone has been especially engaged in our computing unit this half-term. We have been learning about algorithms and how to sequence instructions for the BeeBots. We also had a very enjoyable science lesson last week identifying the parts of a plant using real flowers. Keep it up Squirrels! Click for more news and photos

This week in writing we were building on our use of 'a' and 'an' learning. This forms part of our study of the book Egyptology, exploring Ancient Egypt and indeed the diary of an archaeologist. We have been broadening our vocabulary and phrases and in this lesson we developed a poster of 'rules' to demonstrate when each should be used and why.

Year 4 News

Our dance unit in PE came to an exciting close this week as we performed the Samba moves we had learnt in unison and canon and created a carnival style “street” formation. We worked in small groups to choreograph our own Samba style routines and performed them for each other. Year 4 earnt a “Class Compliment” for how well they all got involved in this task.

All the children worked well in their groups and were a respectful and applauding audience. Well done Year 4!   Photo gallery

Year 5 News

In science we investigated the pH values of unknown liquids and identified whether they were acid, neutral or alkaline – we were amazed at just how acidic cola was, we must remember to brush our teeth if we are drinking it in the evening.

RE in Key Stage 2

Years 3, 4 and 5 enjoyed an interactive experience led by Reverend Dawn and Reverend Lesley about The Eucharist. They were shown and taught about the stages of the service and the significance and symbolism of each part. Each child was given mementos at each station including craft activities as keepsakes.

Thank you to Reverend Dawn and Reverend Lesley for giving up their time to do this for us. We all thoroughly enjoyed the morning.

Forest School News

Hedgehogs are continuing to think about birds in their Forest School sessions. This week we spotted a nest in the hedge around Forest School and some of us had a go at creating our own for the toy birds. We played a game to help with bird identification and are becoming more confident at recognising a blackbird, blue tit and robin.

Safer Internet Day

Next week will see the children of Monksmoor Park join thousands of others across the country to celebrate and take part in Safer Internet Day. Each year has a different focus that covers an online issue or theme that speaks about the things young people are seeing and experiencing online. As a school we understand the importance of being a responsible digital citizen and we hope that day supplements the work that they carry out during the year as part of their Computing and PHSE lessons.

This year Safer Internet Day will be focusing on change online, this includes covering:

  • Children’s perspective on new and emerging technology
  • Using the internet to make change for the better
  • The changes children want to see online
  • The things that can influence and change the way young people think, feel and act online and offline

Safer Internet Day - ‘Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online’.

We were honoured to receive a certificate from Holy Cross Church for our Nativity Shepherd Snowman made out of willow and individual pieces of Christmas art.

This was the second year that we created a whole school art project for display in Holy Cross at Christmas time. We really enjoyed being led by Mrs Davis who was coordinating the project. Her boundless enthusiasm and creative inspiration always sparks a light in the children. Thank you Mrs Davis for your hard work from half-term through until Christmas.
