Harvest Festival - Wednesday 18th October

Dear Parents and Carers,

Harvest Festival Collective Worship and Food Bank Donations

We hope this letter finds you and your family in good health and high spirits. As we approach the autumn season, we are excited to announce our upcoming Harvest Festival Collective Worship, a time-honoured tradition at Monksmoor. This event not only provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to come together in celebration but also allows us to give back to our local community.

The Harvest Festival Collective Worship will take place on Wednesday 18th October, with some Year 5 children helping during the event. During this event, our children will mark the significance of the harvest season and the importance of sharing with those in need.

In the spirit of this tradition, we are kindly requesting your support to make a positive impact on our local community. As part of our commitment to social responsibility, we will be collecting non-perishable food items and essential supplies to donate to the Daventry Food Bank (Daventryfoodbank). Your contributions can make a significant difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate, especially during these challenging times.

If you would like to participate, we kindly ask that you consider donating items such as canned goods, toiletries, long-life milk and other non-perishable food items; a full list of desired items can be found here. We will be collecting these items at the school from 16th, with collection points conveniently located at the main entrance, or via your child's classroom door.

Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated. The food and supplies collected will be delivered to the Daventry Food Bank, where they will be distributed to those in our community who are in need.

We look forward to celebrating the Harvest Festival with your child and the entire school community. Your support and participation in this initiative will not only enhance the educational experience for our students but also demonstrate the importance of empathy, compassion, and community service.

Thank you in advance for your support in making this year's Harvest Festival Collective Worship a memorable and meaningful event for everyone involved. If you have any questions or require further information, please feel free to contact us.

Warm regards,
Mr Gatehouse

Nursery News

The search for a mysterious bear has begun this week in Nursery as we have retold the story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt.' We have hunted high and low, searched the mud kitchen, ventured down to the field and even built our own wooden cave, but no sign so far of the elusive wet-nosed brute. The Hunt goes on ...

This week we have been investigating leaves and creating observational drawings with lots of detail, making us very, very proud! We have also continued to form letters using our phonics and to begin to write our story. Our storytelling really helps with this. We have also begun to learn facts about nocturnal animals and are fascinated by owls!

Year 1 News

Year 1 enjoyed acting out weddings last week for their learning on how people show their belonging when they marry.  They made and exchanged rings and said promises to each other, such as 'I will look after you when you're poorly' and 'I will always play with you'.

We also had a visit from Revd. Dawn to learn about Baptism.  We got to smell the holy oil and joined in as Rev. Dawn baptised one of our school babies!  We had a go ourselves in class and enjoyed making the mark of the cross on our dolls' heads. Photo gallery

Year 1 Reminder

As part of our 'Belonging' unit in RE this term, we are thinking about the groups and communities that we belong to. On Thursday 19th October, the children are invited to bring to school the uniform of a club that they attend (e.g. Rainbows, Beavers, sports clubs etc.) to change into for the afternoon. Alternatively, they could bring in an item from a group that they belong to. Examples could include swimming goggles, ballet shoes or a family photo.

Year 2 News

Year 2 continue to be enthusiastic and engaged in our history theme this term. This week we focused on significant explorers Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. We built on previous learning about timelines and chronology to order events from their lives into chronological order.

Year 4 News

As part of our People of God topic in RE, we invited Major Catherine Rand from the Rugby Branch of the Salvation Army to talk to the children about the organisation and answer their intelligent and thoughtful questions. It was fascinating to hear about Catherine’s childhood growing up as a child of missionaries in Kenya and her work now.

Year 5 News

This week Dragonflies have started their new English unit looking at how a biography is constructed.  They reviewed the main “shapes” that can be used to decide what information we want to share with our readers.  For this unit we are basing our whole class model text on Sir David Attenborough and have already found out some key dates and important moments in his life that we can use in our writing.  More Year 5 news and photos.

Forest School News

There has been a definite turn in the seasons and autumn has arrived at Forest School. Years 4 and 5 have been enjoying the traditional activity of playing conkers this week. We used conker clamps and palm drills to very carefully drill a hole through our conkers and then tried to use our knowledge of knots to keep them on the string! It was lovely to see the children enjoying themselves with lots of laughter, discussion of rules and dealing well with the jeopardy of a large crack appearing in their conker! Whole School Art Project

We are happy to completing another whole school Christmas art project for display at the Holy Cross Church in Daventry.

Mrs Davis led us in creating our Monksmoor Angel Joy last year for the Holy Cross Christmas tree festival and we won first prize.  This year there is no festival but we are honoured to have been asked to produce a piece of art for the Church to display throughout December.

Mrs Davis is leading our project and she and our classes would like you and your children to help in a variety of ways please:

  • Can you collect pine cones and acorns on your autumnal walks?
  • Can you supply us with any white decorations, wool and ribbons?
  • We also need white stuffing to make a snowman's body.  We need old (but clean) cushion or pillow insides/filling.

If you can help with any of the above please send it to your child's classroom in a bag labelled for Mrs Davis.  Thank you in advance for your support!

Families of Neuro-Atypical Children

Balancing the different needs of family members is always a challenge, but if a child in the family has autism, this can be even more demanding. It can be difficult for parents under this kind of pressure to model emotional regulation which in turn impacts on the children and can quickly become a negative cycle. Identifying support networks such as family, friends, or support groups of other parents who have children with autism can be a huge help.

For more information please see the Dragonfly Impact newsletter on our website.
