Summer Term 1 (24-25)

In year 1 we have been enjoying our new topic ‘Animal Kingdom’. In art we have been exploring primary colours and how we can mix them together to create secondary colours.  We then painted tiger pictures by mixing red and yellow to make the orange and blue and yellow to make the green for the background.  We then explored making different shades of green by mixing different quantities of blue and yellow.  We have also looked at some work by the artist Steven Brown and created our own colourful pieces in a similar style.

In computing we have been learning how to use digital writing to write up animal facts.  We have explored changing the font by underlining it or making it italic or bold.  We have also been uploading a picture to add to our work.

In design and technology we have been exploring how to use different fastening techniques on a piece of material.  We used glue, staples and safety pins.  We are now looking forward to making a tiger puppet next half term.

In PE we have been practising athletics skills.  We have been learning how we run at different speeds depending on if we are running  for a short or long distance.  We have also been developing our throwing skills using the shot put, discus and javelin.

In Forest School Year 1 had a go at the Japanese art of Hapa Zome (leaf printing) using hammers and wood and made some beautiful creations. They used gardening tools to maintain our Forest School area. It has been lovely to see team work continuing, when they have decided to make dens and obstacle courses together. They have been challenging their balancing and learning to assess the safety of their obstacles. Lots of insects have been found and studied too!
