Top Gear for Year 5
This week we have put our science investigation skill to the test: firstly we investigated the effect of using different sized gears. By selecting a range of different gears we observed how many rotations the ‘driver’ gear and ‘driven’ gear completed and then recorded this as a ratio. We found that we could use a large driver gear combined with a small driven gear to get an effort to load ratio of 1:3 (meaning it was easier to move). We then investigated the use of levers to lift a load measuring the force required using a Newton meter.
In English we are approaching the end of our biography unit and in maths we have switched our attention to deepening our understanding of fractions.
