Year 2 started the week with a powerful day lead by Northampton Town Football Club. Mr Barnes joined us for the day and taught us all about Walter Tull. We learned how he was a professional football player who became the first black officer to lead soldiers into battle during World War One.

We used our understanding to write postcards in role as Walter Tull himself and took part in some team building activities of our own to simulate some of the challenges of life in the trenches. We had to learn to be resilient, communicate and work together when facing difficult challenges. One of the most interesting parts of the day was discussing how many of the posters encouraging soldiers to sign up for war used the language of football as clever wordplay to encourage young people to join. The children created their own posters using this concept. We had a great day and hope the children took lots of learning from it!
